Photography Expeditions in NuquiCO

A roadless stretch of Colombia's Pacific coast in Choco, where rainforest meets black-sand beaches and, from July to October, thousands of humpback whales arrive to give birth in the warm gulf.

Why here

Every July the Gulf of Tribuga fills with humpback whales that swam five thousand miles from Antarctic waters to give birth here, and Nuqui puts photographers closer to the calving season than almost anywhere: mothers teaching calves to breach within sight of the beach lodges, males breaching and tail-slapping through their courtship displays, all against a backdrop of rainforest running straight into the sea. There are no roads in, no crowds, and no infrastructure beyond a string of eco-lodges, which is exactly what keeps the spectacle intact. Between whale outings the same coast serves thermal springs, jungle waterfalls, and Embera community visits.

Whale season runs July through October, peaking August-September when mothers and calves are most active near shore. This is one of the wettest places on earth: expect daily rain, protect gear accordingly, and treat gray skies as the price of the greenest coastline in the Americas. Boats go out in the morning before wind picks up.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

Fly to Nuqui's airstrip (NQU) via Medellin on small regional aircraft; flights are weather-dependent and baggage limits are tight, so pack camera gear as your priority. Lodges south of town on Guachalito Beach arrange whale boats, guides, and all meals as packages. Book the July-October season one to three months ahead; capacity on this coast is small.
