Photography Expeditions in MirissaLK
A palm-fringed harbor town on Sri Lanka's south coast where the continental shelf drops close to shore, putting blue whales, the largest animals that have ever lived, within a morning's boat ride.
Why here
Off Mirissa the continental shelf plunges within a few miles of the beach, and the deep upwellings hold what may be the world's most reliable blue whale population: from November through April, morning boats find them on most trips, along with sperm whales, spinner dolphin superpods, and occasional orcas. Nowhere else can a photographer this dependably frame a hundred-foot blue whale before lunch and be back on a surf beach by noon. The fleet ranges from cattle boats to committed operators; choosing one that follows international approach guidelines is the difference between a photograph and a harassment scene.
Best months
The season runs November through April on calm southwest-monsoon-free seas, peaking December through March. Boats leave around 6:30 am for the calmest water and best light; afternoons blow out. May through October the sea state ends trips and the whales disperse. Bring a mid-range zoom; whales surface unpredictably on all sides.
Getting there & around
Mirissa sits on the Galle-Matara coastal strip, about two and a half hours from Colombo (CMB) by expressway or train. Book directly with a responsible operator rather than through beach touts, and take the seasickness tablet they offer; the swell is long-period even on calm days. Combine with Weligama's surf, ten minutes up the road.

Raja & the Whales
OutfitterMirissa's original and most responsible whale-watching operation, a local family business that follows international approach guidelines, contributes sightings data to research organizations, and runs its boats for the whales' comfort first, which is also what gets photographers natural behavior.
