Photography Expeditions in MaunBW
The gateway town to the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Maun's airstrip is one of the busiest in sub-Saharan Africa during peak season, with light aircraft the primary way to access the remote camps and channels of the Delta interior.
Why here
The Okavango Delta from the air and from the water gives photographic angles that standard safari vehicles cannot access. Aerial photography from light aircraft at low altitude over the channels produces a perspective on the Delta's landscape and wildlife patterns that no other approach delivers. At ground level, mokoro (dugout canoe) travel through the papyrus and lily channels lets photographers work from water level for the eye-contact angle on wildlife. The Delta's wildlife concentration in dry season (June-October) is extreme: large elephant herds crossing channels, lion prides on islands, and the lighting in the golden hour over the floodplain is among the best in Africa.
Best months
June through October is dry season and peak photography season, with animals concentrated around water, clear skies, and the signature golden-dust light of the Botswana dry season. April-May brings the Okavango flood in from Angola; the channels fill and aerial photography of the expanding water system is exceptional in this window. November-March (wet/green season) has fewer visitors, lush landscapes, and exceptional birding, but some camps close and channel navigation is harder.
Getting there & around
International connections to Maun (MUB) via Johannesburg. Most Delta photography programs are sold as all-inclusive packages from specialist safari operators; standalone aerial photography flight bookings are possible through charter companies at Maun airport. The camps most suited to serious photography work (Mombo, Chitabe, Vumbura) are in the north and require light aircraft camp transfers from Maun as part of the booking. Botswana is one of the most expensive safari destinations in Africa by design (low volume, high spend conservation model). Budget 10-14 days minimum for a meaningful photography circuit.

Wilderness Air
OutfitterWilderness Air is the primary light aircraft charter network serving the Okavango Delta from Maun, connecting the main remote safari camps in the Delta and Linyanti. Operating as part of the Wilderness group, it also provides aerial transfers for photography-focused travelers and can be arranged for dedicated aerial photography flights over the Delta. Serves as the primary air access to most high-end camps in the northern Delta system.
